교목 혹은 관목. 상록성 혹은 낙엽성이다. 잎은 마주나기, 홑잎, 잎맥은 손바닥 모양, 3출 겹잎, 혹은 손바닥 모양의 겹잎이다. 꽃차례는 총상, 원추 혹은 산방꽃차례이다. 꽃은 통상 안갖춘꽃이지만 가끔 갖춘꽃도 존재한다. 꽃받침은(4-)5(-12), 꽃잎은 없거나 혹은 화반이 발달한 기관에(4-)5(-12)개가 달린다. 수술은 4-13개, 심피는 2개, 암술머리는 2개, 암술대는 통상 2개, 씨방 상위, 씨방실 2개, 밑씨 4개이다. 열매는 2개의 분열과로 1개의 종자가 있는 시과이다. 종자는 달걀형이면서 매우 밀착되어 있고, 종피는 얇은 막으로 발달하며, 내피는 때로 단단하다. 떡잎은 얇은 잎과 같다.
