Elaeocarpaceae Juss.

Evergreen or semi-evergreen tree or shrub. leaves alternate or occasionally opposite, and simple with pinnate venation. Inflorescences from leaf axils or at the tips of branches, and inflorescence racemes, spikes, shortened racemes, or solitary flowers. flowers actinomorphic and bisexual or unisexual, with 4 or 5 sepals and petals or none. sepals usually fused at the base and the petals often clawed or absent. stamens usually 8 or more, and ovary superior with 2 to several carpels.  fruit capsule or drupe, and seeds with rich endosperm and a flat cotyledon.

교목 또는 관목으로 상록성 또는 반상록성이다. 잎은 어긋나기를 하거나 드물게 마주나기를 하며 턱잎은 있거나 없고, 홑잎으로 깃털맥을 갖는다. 꽃차례는 잎겨드랑이 또는 가지 끝에서 나오며, 산방꽃차례 또는 원추꽃차례로 때로는 단축꽃차례나 단일꽃차례를 갖는다. 꽃은 양성화 또는 잡성, 4, 5수성으로 방사상칭, 포가 있다. 꽃받침은 4 또는 5 장으로 아래쪽이 붙어 있거나 떨어지며 서로 포개진다. 꽃잎은 4 또는 5장, 또는 없으며, 기왓장처럼 포개지거나 나란히 마주 붙어 있으며, 가장자리에는 술이 달려 있거나 드물게 거치가 없다. 수술은 8 개 또는 다수로 수술대는 떨어져 있거나 화반에 부착되며, 꽃밥은 2 실로 정단부에 털이 있다. 씨방은 상위 2-다수의 실로 이루어지며 중축태좌로 각 실에 2-다수의 배주가 들어 있고 암술대는 합쳐져 있거나 떨어져 있다. 열매는 핵과 또는 삭과로 종자는 배유가 풍부하고 배는 납작하다.
