Torreya nucifera (L.) Siebold & Zucc.

상록 교목. 높이 25m. 지름 1m. 가지가 사방으로 퍼진다. 수피는 회갈색, 노목의 것은 얕게 갈라져서 떨어진다. 소지 털이 없으며, 녹색의 소지가 3년 후에는 적갈색으로 변한다. 잎 1.0-2.5cm × 0.3-0.4cm, 깃털형으로 배열, 두텁고 선형 예첨두로서 털이 없고 표면은 짙은 녹색, 뒷면은 갈색이면서, 중륵과 가장자리는 녹색이다. 잎자루는 길이 2-3mm이며 6-7년 만에 떨어진다. 배우체 암수딴그루, 수배우체는 10개 내외의 갈색 포, 난상 원형, 길이 10mm, 10여개의 배우체가 달린다. 암배우체는 한군데에 2-3개씩 달리고 5-6개의 녹색 포로 싸인 불규칙한 달걀형, 길이 6mm이다. 구과 대가 없고 도란형 또는 타원형, 25-28mm × 20mm, 두께 3mm정도, 쌍자엽 식물의 열매 핵과처럼 육질의 종의로 완전히 싸여 있다. 종자 양끝이 좁고 타원형, 23mm × 12mm, 다갈색, 껍질이 딱딱하며 내피는 적갈색이다.

Trees to 25 m tall; trunk to 1 m d.b.h.; bark light brown, fissured and peeling off in thin strips. Axis of leafy branchlets hairless, reddish brown in 3rd year; evergreen needle-shape foliage, Leaves 2-ranked, linear, 1.0-2.5 cm × 0.3-0.4 cm, rigid, pale green adaxially, stomatal bands 2, pale yellow, narrow, impressed, base cuneate into a short petiole (2-3mm long), apex with a long aharp point that is piercing to the touch. Pollen and seeds borne on separate trees.  Seeds completely surrounded by a fleshy cup (aril) that at maturitity is dark green and the whole drupelike.  Seed dark green when young, purplish brown at maturity, ellipsoid-obovoid or obovoid, 23 × 12 mm.
