낙엽성 교목. 높이 14m. 수피 연한 갈색. 겨울눈 및 소지 가지 끝에 정아가 1개 달리고, 측아는 긴달걀형, 달걀형, 끝은 날카로우며, 아린은 2개로 털이 많다, 정아는 측아보다 크고 길이 6-10mm이다. 어린가지는 노란색 또는 적색, 털이 있다. 잎자국은 V자형이다. 잎 마주나기, 타원상달걀형 또는 넓은달걀형, 첨두, 심장저, 5(7)개로 갈라지고, 크기는 8-14cm × 8-13cm, 결각에 예리한 톱니가 있으며 열편 끝에 톱니가 없고, 표면에 잔털이 있으나 점차 없어지며 뒷면은 잎맥을 따라 밀모가 잎다. 잎자루는 길이 3-12cm, 붉은빛이 돌며 잔털이 있다. 꽃 양성화와 수꽃이 한그루에 달리며(andromonoecious), 총상형 원추꽃차례는 가지 끝에 달리고 털이 밀생한다. 꽃차례 전체 길이는 8-10cm, 30-40여개의 꽃이 달리며 총꽃자루의 길이는 3-5cm이다. 소꽃자루는 4-6mm로 매우 짧다. 꽃은 4수, 꽃받침은 털이 있고 꽃잎은 노란색, 수술보다 짧으며 씨방에 털이 있다. 열매 및 종자 시과는 길이 15mm, 잔털이 있다.
